Coveting Love Jessica Crawford Book 1 eBook Victoria Schwimley Kate Korten
I love good, long, epic story of love, break-ups, reunions and conflict. I've read some good ones and some pretty terrible ones but author Victoria Schwimley's "Coveting Love" is one of the best that I have read in a long time. The story of Jessica, who is a photographer for a fashion magazine and meets three men who will change her life on her latest assignment. Fashion designer Phillip Stewart is pushy, obsessive and pretty much becomes a thorn in Jessica's side for most of the book. Brandon is a sexy and kind rancher who wins Jessica's heart early on, much to the chagrin of his brother Jeffrey, who seems to want anything that his brother has. This sets up a wonder series of conflicts and events between Jessica and these men as the story progresses and it was a very enjoyable read for me.Product details

Coveting Love Jessica Crawford Book 1 eBook Victoria Schwimley Kate Korten Reviews
Long, Plodding, Tedious, but Okay Book.
This is a review of “Coveting Love” by Victoria Schwimley, a book I won in a Goodreads contest. I won the book for free in exchange for an honest review. Here, therefore, is my honest review.
Reviewer’s Note This review contains some, though not all, of the spoilers in this book. If you don’t like to know what goes on in a book, do not read my reviews. You have been given fair warning.
The Story The book is centered around Jessica Crawford, the heroine of the book, who is the head photographer for Modern Fashions Magazine. She is the only child of Sarah Crawford and an unnamed father who deserted his family when Jessica was a child. Jessica is about to get the most difficult assignment of her career when she is chosen to be the photographer for fashion designer Phillip Stewart’s Outrageously You line. The problem? Stewart is a crude, vulgar, sleazy, licentious womanizer who may also be a criminal. There is one positive to this assignment Jessica meets Brandon Phillips, the hero of the book, a rancher who lives in Northern California and offers Jessica the use of his ranch to do the fashion shoot. As Brandon and Jessica fall in love, their feelings for each other are threatened by Stewart, who wants Jessica as his latest sex toy, and by Brandon’s brother, Jeffrey, who has major bad blood with Brandon. Jeffrey decides to get revenge on Brandon by winning Jessica away from him.
There are also a couple of minor subplots Jessica’s bestie, Amy-no surname-a makeup artist at the same magazine Jessica works for, is pregnant with the child of a married man. The man, his name is Bob, also no surname, claimed he was going to leave his wife and marry Amy, but that doesn’t happen. Amy instead meets, falls in love with and is marrying Randy Jackson, a man she met at a dinner organized by Sarah, who, ironically, at the same dinner, met, fell in love with and is marrying Randy’s father, Grant.
Later, after Amy’s marriage, Jessica’s boss, Clair Anderson, gives Jessica an assignment to shoot a fashion line in Australia. What Clair doesn’t tell Jessica is that the person behind this assignment is, you guessed it, Phillip Stewart, who continues his diabolical plan to get Jessica into his bed.
Although Jessica is royally annoyed to have been duped into coming to Australia, after a while she gets beyond her anger and starts to enjoy the trip, even beginning to-gasp-like Stewart, who, for the most part, acts like a gentleman during her stay there. Jessica also discovers-through snooping-Stewart’s grandmother’s diary and finds that Stewart’s grandmother, is named Adelaide Jessica Johnson-Stewart. Does that have anything to do with Stewart’s fascination with modern-day Jessica? It very well may, as things take a decidedly macabre turn when Stewart locks Jessica in a room in his home. The significance of this is that it was in the same room that Stewart locked away his sister, Elizabeth, later killing her and disposing of her body because she hated Adelaide and made her unhappy. After being held captive for two weeks, Jessica is rescued by Brandon, who went to Australia due to his suspicions over Stewart. Surprisingly, Brandon and Jessica decide not to prosecute Stewart for his crimes, a decision they would come to regret later. Brandon and Jessica also become engaged.
When they arrive back in New York, Jeffrey continues his stalking campaign to win Jessica to him. This campaign includes following Jessica back to California when she goes to visit Amy and Randy. Despite Jeffrey’s stalking of her, and her misgivings about it, Jessica continues to see him and at one point, goes on a date with Jeffrey which nearly ends with them making love in a motel. This despite the fact that she’s engaged to Brandon.
Later, at Thanksgiving, Jessica meets Brandon and Jeffrey’s other brother, Matthew, and their mother, Virginia. We also learn at least a little bit of why Brandon and Jeffrey have bad blood between them.
By the time Christmas arrives, Brandon and Jessica aren’t seeing or speaking to each other. The reason? Brandon has a unreasonable-though not entirely illegitimate-jealous streak in him; he gets angry when he sees Jessica with any other male. He does, however, go to anger management and learns to be less jealous.
Later, Jessica meets up again with Jeffrey, who tells her a story about Brandon’s past and, after that, things take a very bad turn.
What are the reasons for the estrangement between Brandon and Jeffrey? What is the “very bad turn” that occurred between Jeffrey and Jessica? Was the story Jeffrey told Jessica about Brandon’s past the truth? For the answers to these questions, you’ll have to buy the book, because I’m not going to reveal those spoilers. Why would I not reveal all the spoilers in this book when I do in every other book I review? The answer to that is simple. All of the books I review are 20-30 years old or older. Aside from me and a few other die-hards, I’m not sure how many people care about those books anymore. This book, however, is a
relatively new book-originally, it was published in 2008, republished in 2011 and part of a Goodreads giveaway last month. Because of this, I feel an obligation to Mrs. Schwimley not to reveal too many spoilers; hence, my decision not to write everything that happens.
This is a hard book to figure. The biggest issue for me is the fact that Mrs. Schwimley never made me care about Jessica, Brandon or any of the other characters in the book. The book sits on the emotional surface, and even at the end, when that connection is needed most, Mrs. Schwimley doesn’t bring me there. One very important factor in whether I like a book, television show, movie, etc, is that I have to like and care about the people in the production. Jessica, in particular, is a nice lady, although a bit naive. Brandon alternates between nice and charming and raging jealousy, and Jeffrey is just a bastard most of the time, although he can hide his dark side quite well.
Sex Most of the sex scenes are so mild they could almost have belonged to a Harlequin Romance novel from the 1970’s. No heat and no passion.
Violence When Brandon comes to rescue Jessica from Stewart’s imprisonment, they have a fistfight, which is not described in any detail. There is another act of violence later in the book.
Bottom Line This is not a bad book, but I feel that Mrs. Schwimley didn’t do as much with it as she could have. Knowing what I do after reading “Coveting Love”, I would not have bought it had I not received a copy to review.
Abandoned by her father, and raised by her mother, Sarah, that provided her with all of the opportunities that she never had; Jessica Crawford is a successful fashion photographer that doe not have time to find love; she enjoys spending time with friends and visiting her mother, and has a hard time understanding why her mother keeps trying to play matchmaker.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
After being advised by her boss that she is taking on a known womanizer and president of Chic Fashion, Phillip Stewart, Jessica is looking forward to enjoying a quiet weekend in the country with her mother. After her friend and co-worker, Amy, revealed to Jessica that she was pregnant with a married man's child, Jessica insists that Amy accompanies her on the trip to visit her mother; not knowing that her mother is trying to set her up with a successful businessman, Randy.
During dinner, it becomes apparent to Jessica and Sarah that Randy and Amy have a rapport. Much to Jessica's chagrin, she sees that Sarah and Grant have made a connection as well. After dinner, Jessica suggests that she, Randy, and Amy visit a local bar to give Grant and Sarah some privacy. Once Randy and Sarah hit the dance floor, Jessica indulges in a few moments of self-pity until a handsome and rugged man approaches her. He introduces himself as Brandon Phillips; as the two become acquainted, she shares the details of her current project with him and moans over the fact that she has yet to find a location versatile enough for the spread. Brandon gallantly offers to let her shoot the spread at his beautiful ranch. Jessica cannot believe it; in one instant she has not only landed herself a handsome man, but she has also found the perfect location for her photo shoot!
As Jessica makes preparations for the shoot, the relationship between her and Brandon intensifies; however, when she visits his ranch for the photo shoot, she is surprised to discover that Brandon has kept some secrets from her; including the fact that he had been married before, and that his relationship with one of his brothers, Jeffrey, is strained. During her stay at the ranch, Brandon begins to act increasingly jealous and possessive of her and he refuses to reveal why his relationship with Jeffrey is strained. The fact that Brandon is so insistent that she stay away from Jeffrey while refusing to tell her why piques Jessica's curiosity about Jeffrey, and she finds herself becoming attracted to Brandon's forbidden and mysterious brother.
After the photo shoot, Jessica is confused; she thinks she loves Brandon, but is attracted to Jeffrey. She also has another admirer to deal with; the creepy and womanizing Phillip Stewart. Jessica soon discovers that she is being pursued by three men, and finds herself in a precarious position if she spurns one brother to be with the other, it could mean an all out war in the family; however, spurning Phillip's advances could mean that losing Phillip as a client.
What is a woman to do?
Coveting Love by Victoria Schwimley is a thrilling and exciting read. While there are some love scenes in the book, it seems that Schwimley focused her efforts on building suspense about what Jessica would do next rather than building sexual tension. I really didn't connect with the characters; it seemed like one moment Jessica was acting like a mature and level-headed adult, and then she'd act like an insecure teenager. However, Coveting Love is an enjoyable read with a solid plot and enough suspense to keep readers reading. I am looking forward to reading and reviewing the next two books in the series.
The author of Coveting Love has the unique ability to create the story line and stay with it, the story does not wander off to many other story lines thus causing me to have to pause and figure out what the original story was about. Coveting Love has a definite message and the author seems knowledgeable about getting that message across to the me. I would recommend this book to preteens and young adults; and I, as an adult, enjoyed it also.
