Marion Pastor's book was informational without being dull, wise without being condescending, and - best, revealing in specific about how one can be a fine therapist while still struggling along her own personal journey. I also enjoyed her articulate analysis of the individual psycho-spiritual philosophies that she encountered. Although I will probably not do them myself, I enjoyed getting an introduction. And, I found Pastor's candor and intelligence appealing.
This is an autobiography and so much more. The methods and paths that the author used in her search for inner peace and meaning are described clearly and with enough detail but not too much. It has suspense - will she ever find what she is looking for? - and adventure. Her quest takes her to various parts of the world. Anyone who lived thru the 70s and 80s and participated at all in the human potential movement will probably recognize some names here. She had contact with many compelling and charismatic leaders and delved deeply into several methods that enabled her to move forward in her search. She has the ability to describe these methods clearly and share her experiences with them.
Marion Pastor is one of the bravest people I know, but I had no idea of the range of her studies until reading Psychospiritual Explorations. Her book is a fearless description and examination of her personal and spiritual journey through the last half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, covering all kinds of spiritual work, living arrangements, countries, projects, relationships & personalities. She went where the spirit moved her! She describes with journalistic precision and always compassion the various leaders in the psychospiritual movement and their ideas during the time that she knew them. Including her own personal experiences with both the persons and their ideas adds a depth of understanding and vulnerability. This is a wonderful read, full of complexity and insightful surprises.
Marion writes a clear, honest story of her journey to find truth and answers to her life-long questions. She takes you through her painful childhood, confusing teenage and young adult years, and the psycho-spiritual philosophies she encountered in adult experiences, all with the gentle eye of a warm and caring therapist. I enjoyed the trip!
Marion Pastor's memoir is a gripping, very deeply authentic account of Dr. Pastor's personal growth and struggle with demons of her childhood over multiple decades of post-war America. It is beautifully written and searingly honest. Dr. Pastor shares an amazing story which includes her involvement and exploration of what appears to me to be virtually every spiritual and human growth movement of the 1960's, 70's, 80's and 90's!
